Optimum Keeps ESPN, Adds Free ESPN Unlimited, But No Date Yet
Disney and Optimum struck a new deal ahead of football season, so your bill won't jump from a blackout, and some subscribers get a streaming perk thrown in for free, eventually.
What changed
Optimum TV subscribers can stop worrying about losing ESPN right as football season kicks off. Disney and Optimum have signed a new multi-year carriage agreement that keeps ESPN, ABC, NFL Network and the rest of Disney’s channel lineup on Optimum, avoiding the kind of blackout fight that’s hit other providers in recent years. There’s no new monthly fee tied to this deal for existing channels, it’s a renewal, not a rate hike.
The sweetener: eligible Optimum TV subscribers will get access to ESPN Unlimited, Disney’s direct-to-consumer sports streaming service, at no additional cost once it rolls out to them. ESPN Unlimited carries more than 47,000 live events a year, and normally you’d expect to pay for that kind of access as a standalone subscription. Here, it’s bundled in for qualifying customers.
What it actually costs you
For most Optimum TV customers, the near-term financial impact is zero, no blackout means no lost channels, and no rate increase was announced alongside this deal. If you already pay for Optimum TV and qualify for ESPN Unlimited access, you’re getting extra streaming value without an added line item on your bill.
The catch is timing: Disney hasn’t said when “every eligible Optimum customer” will actually see ESPN Unlimited light up on their account. If you’re counting on it for this NFL or college football season, don’t assume it’ll be there by kickoff, check with Optimum directly rather than waiting for it to just appear.
It’s also worth noting the deal expands what Optimum can sell: both its TV and internet-only customers will now have the option to purchase Disney’s streaming services directly through Optimum. That’s a convenience, not a discount, it just means more ways to add a paid Disney subscription to your account if you want one.
Who wins, who doesn’t
Optimum TV subscribers come out ahead here: no blackout, continued access to Disney’s sports and entertainment networks, and a possible free ESPN Unlimited add-on. Cord-cutters on other platforms aren’t left out of the ESPN push either, YouTube TV has separately been folding ESPN Unlimited events, studio shows and documentaries directly into its live-TV guide, so ESPN’s streaming content is showing up in more places without a separate app or charge for existing subscribers of that service.
Nobody covered here is described as paying more. That’s the notable part of this story: in an environment where carriage disputes usually end in either a blackout or a price increase passed to viewers, this one settled without either, at least for now.
What to do about it
If you’re an Optimum TV customer, no action is required to keep your current channels, they’re staying. If you want ESPN Unlimited access, watch your account or Optimum’s notifications for word that it’s live, since Disney hasn’t committed to a specific rollout date. Don’t cancel any existing ESPN+ or ESPN Unlimited subscription in anticipation of the freebie until it actually appears on your account, so you’re not left without access in the gap. And if you’re comparing streaming bundles ahead of football season, factor in that ESPN content is increasingly showing up bundled into services like YouTube TV and now Optimum, which may reduce the case for paying separately elsewhere.
