Meta AI, Not Disney+, Is the Real Threat to Your Cell Data Plan

A new five-minute test shows Meta AI burns nearly three times the data of Disney+, here's what that means if you're on a capped plan.

What actually happened

A new study from eSIM provider Maaltalk timed 95 popular apps for exactly five minutes each on an iPhone, with Wi-Fi off and every other app closed, tracking exact data use down to a tenth of a megabyte. The headline finding isn’t about Disney+ or YouTube, it’s Meta AI, which chewed through 442 MB in five minutes flat. That’s roughly three times what Disney+ used and about four times YouTube’s draw in the same window. It also dwarfed rival AI tools: Gemini used 23 MB, Claude 12 MB, Grok 8 MB, and ChatGPT just 7 MB, meaning Meta AI alone burned through nearly nine times what those four competitors used combined.

Why this matters for your bill

If you’re on an unlimited plan, none of this changes your monthly charge. But plenty of people are still on capped or throttled plans, prepaid lines, family “lite” tiers, or older grandfathered plans with a hard data ceiling, often 3 GB to 10 GB a month. This is where the math gets uncomfortable.

At 442 MB per five minutes, Meta AI works out to roughly 5.3 GB an hour. That means less than two hours of casual chatting with Meta AI could burn through an entire 10 GB monthly allotment, before you’ve streamed a single show. Disney+, by comparison, used about 147 MB in five minutes in this test, or roughly 1.8 GB an hour; YouTube came in near 110 MB in five minutes, about 1.3 GB an hour. Both are real data costs, but neither comes close to Meta AI’s appetite.

Other apps in the test barely register by comparison: Apple TV used 34 MB in five minutes, Twitch 32 MB, Apple Music and YouTube Music tied at 7 MB, and Zoom sipped just 2.8 MB. If you go over your carrier’s cap, you’re typically looking at either an automatic add-on charge, commonly $10 to $15 for another few gigabytes, or a slowdown to reduced speeds until your billing cycle resets. Either way, it’s money or bandwidth you didn’t expect to spend.

Who pays more, who doesn’t

Unlimited-plan customers can mostly shrug this off; the cost is baked into a flat monthly rate regardless of what’s guzzling data in the background. The people who feel this are on metered plans, prepaid lines, or households splitting a shared data bucket across several phones. If a teenager or a work colleague is casually using Meta AI throughout the day, that usage adds up fast and can push a shared family plan into overage territory that everyone on the plan ends up paying for.

What to do about it

Check your plan type first, if it’s unlimited, this is a non-issue. If you’re on a capped plan, a few practical moves help: use Wi-Fi for anything AI-related whenever possible, since generative AI tools appear to be uniquely data-hungry compared with even video streaming. Check your carrier app or Settings > Cellular for a per-app data breakdown so you can see if an AI assistant, not your streaming habit, is the real source of any overage charges. And if you regularly use AI tools on the go, it may be worth comparing your current plan’s overage fees against a mid-tier unlimited plan, the flat monthly cost could be cheaper than repeated add-on charges.
